In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for an international conference to address the growing Jewish refugee crisis. Delegates from 32 countries met in Évian, France.

While most nations were unwilling to significantly expand refugee admissions, the Dominican Republic offered to receive Jewish refugees.

That extraordinary chapter of history became the foundation for SOSÚA.

  • THE HEART OF THE STORY

1940, Joseph arrives in Sosúa with his family carrying the trauma of Europe and anger toward a God he believes has abandoned his people.

There he meets Samuel, a Jamaican Christian who came to the region years earlier to work for the United Fruit Company and remained after building a family with a Dominican woman.

Speaking English, Samuel becomes a bridge between Joseph's family and their unfamiliar new world.

Samuel shares the Gospel not only through his words, but through compassion, friendship, and the way he walks with the family through their pain.

Their relationship becomes the spiritual heart of SOSÚA, a journey through suffering, faith, forgiveness, and hope.

 

  • FROM REFUGEES TO BUILDERS

The refugees of Sosúa did more than find safety, they built a community.

Many arrived from European cities with little or no farming experience. In Sosúa, they learned to work the land, raise cattle, and eventually developed a successful dairy cooperative producing milk and cheese.

What began as a refuge became a thriving agricultural community, a lasting testament to resilience, work, and the opportunity to begin again.
